Hello! I don’t know about you but I love a quick and easy breakfast. Smoothies are easy and delicious and can be made very nutritious. I recently learned something however that made me question my morning smoothie routine. I am learning all about digestion in my Nutritional Therapy program and how digestion is a north to south process that starts in the brain. When you chew your food you are sending signals to your brain to start the digestive processes, cue the saliva! Saliva is made up of electrolytes, hormones, and enzymes. One enzyme of particular importance is salivary amylase which begins the chemical breakdown of carbohydrates in your mouth. As there are a lot of carbohydrates in fruit, this means that when you drink your smoothie through a straw, you are not signaling your saliva to secrete salivary amylase. This leads to undigested starch throughout the whole digestive process leading to undigested starch in the colon which feeds candida and dysbiosis(microbial imbalance). So, it is with a heavy heart that I suggest you eat your smoothie with a spoon. This will help to trigger those important enzymes in the body and help with digestion overall.
With that in mind, I give you my strawberry-banana protein smoothie! It is nothing earth shattering but I find it to be a very delicious breakfast or snack when you are in a rush that is very filling, nourishing, and tastes oh so delicious! I hope you enjoy it. Oh, and it is AIP friendly!
- Place all ingredients in a high powered blender. I used my Blendtec and blend.
- I like to add the collagen hydrolysate at the very end after I have already mixed everything together.
- Serve and enjoy!
